With just FIVE days until Miss World Final 2016, we found it most appropriate to sit down with Mireia Lalaguna, reigning Miss World from Spain, before she passes on the Miss World crown to the new winner.
Was your year what you imagined it to be?
It was even more than what I imagined. My life has changed completely and I can say that I’m now a totally different person. I have grown so much. Helping others and traveling is the best way to learn about yourself.
What’s it like being back at Miss World?
When I see all the contestants, I feel that I would really like to live the experience again. It brings to my mind a lot of amazing memories. It’s not jealousy, but I truly want to be back in this cultural exchange. When I watch the girls, I want to relive all of the competitions- Sports, Top Model, etc.
I can see in them that I am their reference point and I try to give everyone tips and help the nervous ones. I remind them to enjoy each and every day because it goes by so quickly.
What tips would you give to the next Miss World?
I would give her three tips.
1. Your year will be amazing but also filled with many challenges- Try to learn from your mistakes and turn them into your successes.
2. Experience deeply every country that you visit- its culture, food and most importantly its people.
3. Try to influence as many lives as possible- use your title to make a difference.
How many countries did you travel to? Which was your favorite one?
During my time as Miss World, I have traveled to over 20 countries. I cannot say that I had a particular favorite one because I’ve always loved traveling and I can always take something away from each country. The most touching trip for me was Kenya, which was my first time to Africa. We visited the children in the hospital, who had nothing but would still show happiness on their faces. They were able to work together. I was amazed that despite of their circumstances they still had so much joy.
Did you find it difficult to be studying while being Miss World?
For me, studying has always been one of the most important things of my life. When I won Miss World title I was actually still studying in my final year of Pharmacy in Denmark. Between trips and long plane rides, I would always read my notes and try to take advantage of my experiences and situations. I feel my career has a lot of relation to my title. Even though I have so many opportunities with Miss World and the future, I still want to maintain part-time studies.
Before becoming Miss World, I saw Pharmacy as simply science, but now after my year as Miss World, I can see that Pharmacy is so much more than that and I can use my experiences to bring it to life and truly help people.
What are some highlights of your year as Miss World?
My spot for the TV show Poker Stars and getting to work with Cristiano Ronaldo, was truly unforgettable. I actually won $20,000 and donated it to my Beauty with a Purpose Project.
Being presented the Celebrity Luxury Award by Princess Beatrice d'Orléans, for my charity work throughout my year.
Attending a dinner with Boris Johnson.
Becoming the first Miss World from Spain. Being the first Spanish winner helps to highlight the values of Miss World and now my country knows what this competition is all about and they know about Beauty with a Purpose.
Anything you’d like to add?
A huge thank-you to the Miss World Organization for believing in me and to Julia Morley for being a mentor and a “Mom” for me. Thank you for making me grow and teaching me so many life lessons.
