Beauty with a Purpose

Miss World Alumna represents her nation at International Leprosy Congress

Julia Gama was one of 5 recipients for the Beauty with a Purpose Award in 2014 for the inspirational work done in Brazil to help combat the threat of leprosy. 2 years later Julia is still committed to the cause, and this week is in China representing Brazil at the 19th International Leprosy Congress.
Since the first International Leprosy Congress was held in 1897, huge advances have been made in the understanding and treatment of leprosy and its sufferers across the globe. Since 1981, over 16 million people have been treated, and the availability of multi-drug therapy means that we should be nearing the goal of completely eradicating Leprosy, but we are not quite there yet.
Running from the 18-21st of September, the 19th Conference is being held under the motto “Unfinished Business” and attendees from academics to non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and private foundations, have been asked to share their views and ideas on this final step.
Julia has been working with the Miss Mundo Brasil Organisation for several years now in their fight against leprosy. Brazil has the second highest level of leprosy cases in the world, and the work the Miss Mundo Brasil Organisation do is invaluable to those dealing with leprosy, which is why Julia was chosen to represent her nation at the conference. She has been sharing her experiences with international leaders and authorities this week in an effort to be able to create a global response and plan to finally eradicate leprosy on Earth.
